Your Guide to HVAC Installation: Getting Your New System Set Up

Getting your home's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system installed is all about setting up the equipment that keeps your home comfortable year-round. This guide will walk you through how our pros check out your place, pick the perfect-sized equipment, handle all the necessary paperwork, and get your new system running smoothly and efficiently for years to come. If you're in Los Angeles County, including areas like West Covina and Baldwin Park, following these best practices—like making sure your system is sized just right, handling refrigerants properly, and sticking to all the rules—will help keep your warranty valid and your energy bills low. After we break down what HVAC installation really means, we'll go step-by-step through the whole process, covering local costs, how we install different systems, what you can do to get ready, what to do after it's done, and answers to common questions. For those who like to see things in person, Piggies Air Conditioning has a showroom right here in Baldwin Park, serving West Covina and Baldwin Park, where you can check out models and schedule a chat. Next up, we'll dive into what HVAC installation is and why having it done right by professionals is so important for safety, performance, and staying on the right side of regulations.

What Exactly Is HVAC Installation and Why Does It Matter So Much?

HVAC installation is the careful process of putting in, connecting, and fine-tuning your heating and cooling equipment so it delivers the comfort and efficiency you expect. When it's installed correctly, your system's capacity, refrigerant levels, ductwork, and controls all work together perfectly with your home's heating and cooling needs. This means you get the SEER or HSPF performance you paid for and lower energy bills. Proper installation also means safe electrical work, correct venting for gas appliances, and following all local permits and refrigerant rules, which keeps everyone in your home safe and your manufacturer's warranty intact. Understanding these basics is key before we even start thinking about picking out your system and the steps our team takes on every job.

What Are the Main Types of HVAC Systems We Install?

When it comes to HVAC systems for your home, you'll most often see central AC, ductless mini-splits, furnaces, and heat pumps. Central AC systems use an outdoor unit connected to an indoor coil, with ductwork distributing the conditioned air throughout your house. Ductless mini-splits offer heating and cooling for specific zones without needing any ducts. Furnaces are your go-to for heating, especially when it's cold out, using combustion to generate heat. Heat pumps are versatile, providing both heating and cooling by moving refrigerant around. Each system has its own advantages: central AC is great for whole-house comfort, mini-splits are perfect for additions or rooms that need their own climate control, furnaces are a reliable choice where natural gas is common, and heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular for their energy efficiency in milder climates. These differences guide how we size and install each system for your home.

How Does Having a Pro Install Your System Make a Difference in Performance and Safety?

Getting a professional to install your HVAC system directly impacts how energy-efficient it is, how comfortable your home feels, and how long your equipment lasts. This is because pros ensure the refrigerant is charged perfectly, the airflow is balanced, and all electrical connections are spot-on. Our technicians use load calculations and follow industry standards like ACCA Manual J to make sure your equipment is sized just right. If it's not, you might not get the SEER efficiency you expect, and the system could end up running too much or wearing out too soon. Safety is also a top priority, with compliant electrical wiring, proper venting for furnaces, and certified handling of refrigerants to meet environmental standards. Choosing skilled installers means you can count on predictable performance and a much lower risk of expensive repairs or safety issues—something that's important to both homeowners and manufacturers.

What Local Rules and Permits Are Involved in HVAC Installation Here in Los Angeles?

In our area, local building departments usually require permits for most HVAC installations to make sure everything meets safety codes and standards. These permits often cover the mechanical work, any electrical updates, and gas line connections. Los Angeles County also has strict rules about handling and disposing of refrigerants, requiring technicians to be certified. Installers need to keep records of proper refrigerant recovery and disposal. The time it takes and the cost of permits can differ from city to city, and bigger jobs, like changing out a lot of ductwork or working with gas lines, might need more detailed inspections. It's always best to figure out who's responsible for permits early on to avoid any delays during installation and to make sure your system passes all the required local checks.

What Are the Step-by-Step Stages of Getting Your HVAC System Installed?

When we install an HVAC system, we follow a clear process from the first chat to the final checks, all designed to make things smooth and keep you in the loop. It starts with checking out your home and figuring out the right system size. Then comes picking the system, getting permits, and finally, the installation day itself, which wraps up with testing and showing you how everything works. Each part needs the right tools, materials, and clear communication with you to keep things safe and on track. Here's a look at what you can expect at each stage and how we organize the work for a reliable outcome.

How Do We Start with the Initial Consultation and Home Assessment?

The first step is a consultation where we take a good look around your home, get measurements, and gather information. This helps us do a load calculation (like a Manual J) to recommend the best-sized equipment for your needs. We'll check your insulation, windows, ductwork, attic ventilation, and how your current system is performing, taking notes and photos for your proposal. To help us tailor our recommendations, you should be ready to share your comfort priorities, current energy costs, and any challenges with accessing certain areas of your home. This initial assessment leads directly into choosing the right system and finalizing its capacity, efficiency, and type.

How Do You Pick the Right HVAC System and Brand for Your Home?

Choosing the right system means balancing your home's size, your efficiency goals (like SEER/HSPF ratings), the type of fuel you want to use, and your budget, all while considering long-term running costs and how reliable the brand is. Key factors include the calculated system size (tonnage), the condition of your existing ductwork, whether you want zoned heating and cooling, and if there are any special offers for higher-efficiency equipment. We help you compare options by looking at all these criteria. As a Daikin Comfort Pro partner, Piggies Air Conditioning has a showroom in Baldwin Park where you can see and discuss different equipment options in person before making a decision, ensuring you feel confident in your choice. What Do You Need to Do to Prepare for Installation Day?

Before installation day arrives, please make sure the areas where we'll be working, both inside and outside, are cleared. Keep your pets in a safe, secure spot, and confirm that all necessary permits have been approved and are ready. We'll also need easy access to your electrical panel. If there are any specific instructions for parking or delivery routes, please let us know. Our team usually needs about 6 feet of clear space around the outdoor unit and a clear path to bring indoor equipment through doorways and hallways. Taking care of these preparations helps us work more efficiently and safely.

What Happens on Installation Day?

Installation day is a coordinated effort. We'll start by bringing in and setting up your new equipment, then carefully remove your old system. Next, we'll place the new outdoor unit (condenser or heat pump) and the indoor coil or furnace. We'll connect the ductwork and run the refrigerant lines. Our electricians and gas technicians will handle the necessary hookups. We'll then test for leaks, set the correct refrigerant charge, and make sure any ventilation or flue systems are properly secured. Throughout the day, we follow strict safety checks and local code requirements, and we'll keep you updated on our progress and any decisions that need to be made. Good communication helps keep the project on schedule and ready for inspections.

Before we can start testing and officially commission your system, our installers will document all the work done and complete any required inspection steps.

TaskTools/Materials NeededHow Long It Usually Takes
Bringing in & setting up equipmentDollies, protective pads, packaging1–3 hours
Removing the old unitHand tools, refrigerant recovery gear1–3 hours

Installing the indoor coil/furnaceDuct connectors, mounting hardware, sealant2–4 hours
Connecting refrigerant lines & electricalVacuum pump, pressure gauges, wiring, circuit breakers1–3 hours
Starting up & testing the systemMultimeter, airflow meter, refrigerant gauges1–2 hours

This table gives you a clear idea of the different jobs our installers do on-site and how long each typically takes, helping you know what to expect for the day.

How Do We Test and Commission Your System After Installation?

Commissioning is our way of making sure your new system is performing exactly as it should. We run a series of tests, including measuring airflow, checking refrigerant pressures, calibrating the thermostat, and testing electrical components. Our technicians verify that the system's operating parameters meet the manufacturer's specifications for efficiency and that all safety features are working correctly. We'll then complete all the necessary paperwork and get your warranty activated. You'll also get a walkthrough on how to use your new system, when to change filters, and how to program your thermostat, so you feel comfortable operating it. Proper commissioning helps prevent future issues and sets the standard for your system's ongoing performance.

What Kind of Support and Maintenance Do We Offer After Installation?

After your system is installed, we provide warranty information, recommend regular maintenance schedules, and offer service plans that include annual check-ups and priority scheduling. Routine maintenance involves changing filters, cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, and ensuring proper airflow to keep your system running efficiently and catch any potential issues early. We'll give you clear documentation about your installed system, including serial numbers and recommended service actions, which is helpful for future check-ups or warranty claims. Having reliable support after installation ensures your system continues to perform at its best and lasts for many years.

What Are the Specific Installation Steps for Different HVAC Systems?

Each type of HVAC system has its own unique installation process because the components, controls, and inspection requirements differ. For central AC, the focus is on integrating the ductwork and charging the refrigerant. Furnaces require careful attention to combustion venting and gas connections. Heat pumps involve connecting refrigerant lines and setting up controls for both heating and cooling seasons. Ductless mini-splits concentrate on mounting the indoor units and routing the refrigerant lines. Understanding these specific sequences helps you know what to expect regarding permits and inspections for each technology, and how to plan your schedule accordingly. The table below outlines the key tasks and common permit requirements for each system type.

System TypeKey Installation TasksCommon Inspection/Permit Requirements
Central ACPlacing the outdoor unit, connecting the indoor evaporator coil, tying into ductwork, charging refrigerantMechanical permit, electrical permit, final inspection
Ductless mini-splitMounting indoor units on walls, running refrigerant lines, setting up condensate drainage, electrical connectionMechanical permit in many areas, electrical permit
Heat pumpPositioning the outdoor unit, connecting the indoor air handler or coil, setting up line-sets and defrost controls, wiring controlsMechanical and electrical permits, possibly an HVAC performance inspection
FurnaceRemoving the old unit, inspecting and repairing venting, ensuring proper combustion air supply and gas line sizing, safety checksMechanical and gas permits, combustion air inspection

What Is the AC Unit Fitting Process for Homes?

When we install an AC unit, we start by choosing the best spot for the outdoor condenser, making sure it's on a stable, level pad to reduce vibrations and allow for good airflow. We then mount the indoor evaporator coil or air handler, connect the refrigerant lines and electrical wiring, and seal all duct connections to prevent leaks and ensure proper airflow. Once the mechanical connections are complete, we'll evacuate the system, charge it with the correct amount of refrigerant according to the manufacturer's specs, and run performance tests, including checking temperature differences and airflow. Following these steps in order ensures your central AC system will deliver the cooling capacity and efficiency you expect.

What Are the Furnace Replacement Steps in Los Angeles County?

Replacing a furnace involves safely disconnecting the old unit, checking and fixing the flue and venting system, and making sure the combustion air supply and gas lines are correctly sized before installing the new furnace. Our technicians perform leak tests on all gas connections, verify the ignition and safety controls, and adjust the venting for efficient exhaust removal, all in line with local codes. Often, an inspection by the local building department or a certified inspector is required to confirm that the combustion is safe and everything meets code. Paying close attention to venting and gas connections during replacement is crucial for occupant safety and ensuring the new furnace operates reliably.

How Is a Heat Pump Installed, and What Are Its Advantages?

Installing a heat pump is similar to installing a central AC system, but it also includes reversible controls and systems to manage defrosting for winter use. Our installers will position the outdoor unit, connect the refrigerant lines, and set up the controls for both heating and cooling modes. The benefits of a heat pump include having both heating and cooling in one system, improved energy efficiency in milder climates, and potentially lower carbon emissions compared to using fossil fuels for heating. Heat pumps require precise refrigerant charging and control calibration to operate efficiently throughout the year. Their ability to provide both heating and cooling makes them a popular choice for homes in Los Angeles County looking for efficient comfort all year long.

How Should Homeowners Get Ready for HVAC Installation?

Getting prepared beforehand helps avoid delays on installation day and ensures the process goes smoothly and safely. This means making sure we have clear access, confirming permits are in order, and understanding the logistics. We recommend clearing pathways, verifying permit approvals, providing details about your current system, and letting us know where we can stage equipment. Choosing the right installer is also key. We suggest checking their local experience, references, written proposals, and any proof of manufacturer partnerships or showroom presence. The checklist and tips below will help you get ready and select an installer who meets your technical and service needs.

  • Clear the way: Please move furniture, outdoor obstacles, and ensure there's parking space near the entry points.
  • Keep pets and kids safe: Make sure pets and children are in a secure area away from the work zone.
  • Gather system info: Have manuals, past service records, and energy bills handy for the installer.
  • Confirm permits: Double-check that all necessary permits are approved and displayed as required by your local authority.

What Home Preparations Are Needed Before Installation Day?

Before installation day, please clear the indoor and outdoor areas where we'll be working. It's also helpful to have information about your existing equipment ready, and ensure we have access to electrical panels, attics, or crawl spaces if needed. Having your utility information and previous service records available helps us understand your system's history and anticipate any potential issues. You should also confirm the status of any permits and any scheduled municipal inspections so we can coordinate the final approvals. These preparations will help us move smoothly into selecting an installer based on solid vetting criteria.

How Can Homeowners Choose a Qualified HVAC Installer?

To choose a qualified installer, look into their local experience, request detailed written proposals with clear scopes and estimates, check references, and see if they have manufacturer partnerships or a showroom, which often indicates strong technical support. Be wary of vague proposals, installers who don't handle permits, or those without proof of insurance. Always ask for a detailed scope that includes efficiency ratings, warranty terms, and maintenance expectations. Piggies Air Conditioning serves West Covina and Baldwin Park and has a showroom in Baldwin Park, offering a local spot for customers to compare models and discuss service options face-to-face. Choosing an installer with transparent documentation and local availability reduces installation risks and ensures better post-installation support.

Why Is Professional Installation So Important Compared to DIY?

Professional installation is essential because licensed technicians are trained to follow all building codes, perform accurate load calculations, and handle refrigerants and gas lines safely—tasks that are typically beyond the scope and legal capabilities of DIYers. Attempting a DIY installation can void your manufacturer's warranty, create dangerous conditions related to combustion or electricity, and result in inefficient operation that increases your costs over time. Certified installers carry insurance and are familiar with local permit processes, which protects you from liability and ensures the work is properly inspected. For most homeowners, hiring a professional provides clear benefits in safety, compliance, and performance that far outweigh any potential cost savings from doing it yourself.

Wrapping It Up

Understanding the HVAC installation process empowers you to make smart choices that will boost your home's comfort and efficiency. By following best practices and working with skilled professionals, you can ensure a safe, compliant, and effective installation that's perfect for your needs. Ruben from Piggies went above and beyond when he came to provide us with a quote for doing some duct work. He was also able to identify the underlying problem as to why we have been having a major issue with our heat in our office suite. He took photos, explained the issue, what he could and could not do, and what to communicate to our property owner. He spent far longer answering questions and finding the source of an issue that wasn't even the reason why he was onsite. EXCELLENT

First of all I NEVER do reviews or rate any company or product. But, Piggies Air Conditioning did an amazing job at a GREAT price! I always get at least 3 estimates, and in this particular situation, I had at least 5. These guys were the most reasonable by several thousand dollars, with BETTER equipment that the others! Our ac and heat package is at least a 17 seer system, which is top of the line! I've been in the construction business my entire life, and dealt with many companies from all the trades. It really doesn't get any better than Piggies! This company and its personnel were on time, and courteous, which is hard to come by these days. Ruben, Luis were very professional, and I was in constant contact with them throughout the job. The Daikin product is one of the best in the world! I'm giving Piggies two thumbs way up!

Overall great job replacing our antiquated AC unit. The evaluation and detail is a big deal to us. Rueben explained all the techincal aspects and gave us great
recommendations and feedback. The actual installation was painless and unremarkable, his AC experts got it done, got it cleaned and most importantly got it right. Rueben even went a step further to assure we had
protection from the coming rain, that is service unheard of these days. His price was competitive and a REAL value for the service we recieved. Using anyone else for your AC needs, would be a huge mistake. We thank them again and will recommend to everyone.

I am a realtor in Los Angeles, and while we were getting ready to sell my clients home in Pasadena, an inspector from another company backed into my clients air conditioner. I was referred to Piggies AC by another trusted client so I called them. I talked to Ruben, he answered the phone right away, answered some of my initial questions, and was able to get me an appointment just two days later. On site Ruben was there on time, was extremely knowledgeable, And told us the best course of action to get the AC unit back in good working order. A day or two later he sent us an invoice and his prices were very reasonable. I am happy, Client is happy, thank you Ruben!

Leaving a 5-star review just after the initial inspection because I was blown away by Ruben's professionalism.
Echoing a lot of the other reviews here, Piggies Air Conditioning responds so quickly to requests (even though I actually accidentally sent in multiple requests on my side without responding, oops!)
They were able to come do a FREE energy audit and initial inspection on the same day and Ruben was amazing at explaining his thoughts on our house's situation and what he thought was worth the money and wasn't worth the money.
I truly felt like he was trying to help me find the best solution to our issues instead of just trying to upsell us on everything and anything.
I'm definitely recommending this business to anyone I know if they want a trustworthy and realistic service, value, and quality.
