Before You Call a Tech: DIY AC Troubleshooting for San Gabriel Valley Homeowners

AC troubleshooting before calling a pro can save you time, money, and a lot of frustration — especially on a sweltering summer afternoon in Baldwin Park or West Covina when your system suddenly stops cooling. The good news? A surprising number of AC problems come down to simple fixes that take less than 10 minutes to check.

Here are the most common things to check first:

  1. Thermostat settings — Make sure it's set to "Cool" mode with the fan on "Auto," and that the target temperature is at least 3–5 degrees below the current room temperature.
  2. Thermostat batteries — A blank or dim display often just means dead batteries.
  3. Circuit breaker — Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker and reset it by flipping it fully off, then back on.
  4. Air filter — Hold it up to a light source. If you can't see light through it, replace it. Clogged filters are behind the majority of AC service calls.
  5. Vents and registers — Make sure furniture, curtains, or rugs aren't blocking airflow throughout your home.
  6. Outdoor unit — Check that the condenser has at least 2 feet of clearance and isn't buried in leaves or debris.
  7. Condensate drain line — Look for standing water in the drain pan, which can trigger a safety shutoff.

If none of these quick checks solve the problem, that's when it's time to call a professional HVAC technician.

Over three-quarters of US homes rely on air conditioning, and in the San Gabriel Valley, where summer heat regularly pushes into the 90s and beyond, a working AC isn't a luxury — it's essential. Most homeowners reach for the phone the moment something goes wrong, but many common AC issues are genuinely fixable without a service call. This guide walks you through every check you can safely do yourself, and tells you clearly when to stop and call in a pro.

Why is my AC not cooling my San Gabriel Valley home?

It is May 2026, and the Southern California sun is starting to show its teeth. You walk over to your thermostat, expecting a blast of arctic air, but the house feels like a sauna. Before you panic, let's look at the "brain" of your system.

close up of a digital thermostat display showing temperature settings

The first step in ac troubleshooting before calling a pro is verifying your thermostat settings. It sounds silly, but we’ve seen countless cases where a family member accidentally bumped the mode to "Heat" or "Fan Only" during a spring cleaning session. Ensure the mode is set to "Cool." If the fan is set to "On" rather than "Auto," the blower will run constantly, even when the AC isn’t actually cooling, which can lead to warmer air blowing through the vents during the "rest" cycles.

If your thermostat screen is blank or dim, the solution might be as simple as two AA batteries. If the screen is powered but the system won't kick on, try lowering the temperature by 5 degrees below the current room ambient. This should trigger a cooling cycle. If the system remains silent, you might need to dig deeper into what to check when your AC system fails to power up.

The 15-20 Degree Rule

A great way to tell if your AC is actually "working" but just struggling is the temperature differential test. Use a simple thermometer to measure the air temperature at the return vent (where the air goes in) and the supply vent (where the cold air comes out). A healthy, properly functioning system should show a 15-20 degree temperature difference. If the gap is smaller, your system might be low on refrigerant or dealing with dirty coils.

Common AC troubleshooting before calling a pro for power issues

If the thermostat is fine but the unit is dead, we need to follow the power. Your AC system typically runs on two separate circuits: one for the indoor air handler and one for the outdoor condenser.

  1. The Electrical Panel: Find your home’s main breaker box. Look for switches labeled "AC" or "HVAC." Even if a breaker doesn't look tripped, flip it all the way to "Off" and then back to "On." If you're dealing with a system that trips the circuit breaker repeatedly, stop immediately. This indicates a serious electrical fault or a failing compressor.
  2. The Indoor Switch: Most homes in Pasadena and Arcadia have a switch near the indoor furnace or air handler that looks just like a standard light switch. It’s common for someone to accidentally flip this off while reaching for a light in a dark closet or attic.
  3. The Outdoor Disconnect: Next to your outdoor unit, there is a small metal box. Inside, there is a "pull-out" fuse or a toggle switch. Ensure this hasn't been bumped or disconnected.

Power-Related Symptoms List:

  • Thermostat is on, but nothing happens.
  • The indoor fan blows, but the outdoor unit is silent.
  • The system hums but the fan doesn't spin (often a sign of a failed capacitor).
  • The breaker trips the second the AC tries to start.

How to fix weak airflow and frozen coils in West Covina

If your AC is running but the air coming out of the vents feels like a tired whisper, you likely have an airflow problem. In the San Gabriel Valley, dust and pollen can quickly turn your AC’s "lungs" into a clogged mess.

The air filter is the single most important DIY maintenance task. We recommend checking it every 30 days, especially if you have pets or live near construction in growing areas like West Covina. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which forces the system to work harder and can eventually cause the evaporator coils to freeze over. When airflow is choked, the refrigerant in the coils gets too cold, turning the humidity in the air into a block of ice.

If you notice ice on the copper lines leading to your indoor unit, turn the AC off immediately and switch the fan to "On." This will blow warm air over the coils to melt the ice. Never try to chip the ice off with a knife; you could puncture the refrigerant lines, leading to an expensive repair. Once the ice is gone, address weak airflow from your AC vents by checking for blocked registers. Ensure that furniture or heavy curtains aren't covering the vents in your living room or bedrooms.

Final AC troubleshooting before calling a pro for drainage problems

Your air conditioner doesn't just cool the air; it removes humidity. This moisture collects in a drain pan and flows out through a condensate line. In humid months, or if algae starts to grow, this line can clog.

If the line clogs, water backs up into the drain pan. Most modern systems in San Marino and Alhambra are equipped with a "safety float switch." This is a small device that detects rising water and kills power to the AC to prevent a flood in your home. If your AC suddenly stops working and you see water in the pan, you've found your culprit.

To fix this, you can use a wet/dry shop vac to suck the clog out from the exterior end of the drain line. To prevent future AC condensate drain blockages, pour a quarter-cup of distilled white vinegar down the drain line access port every few months. This kills the "sludge" that causes clogs. If your AC isn't dehumidifying properly, a partially blocked line or a dirty coil might be the reason.

When to stop AC troubleshooting before calling a pro

While we love an empowered homeowner, there are times when DIY becomes dangerous or counterproductive. Knowing when to put down the screwdriver is just as important as knowing how to use it.

If you have replaced the filter, reset the breaker, and cleared the drain line, but you still see ice on your AC unit, you likely have a refrigerant leak. Handling refrigerant requires EPA 608 certification and specialized tools. This is not a DIY job.

Furthermore, listen to the sounds your system is making. A grinding noise usually points to a failing motor bearing or a compressor issue. If you smell something burning — like ozone or toasted plastic — shut the system off at the breaker immediately. This is an electrical fire hazard. These are clear signs your AC needs professional repair before the problem escalates into a total system replacement.

Outdoor unit maintenance and safety

The outdoor unit, or condenser, is responsible for releasing the heat collected from inside your home. If it can't "breathe," your house won't stay cool.

  • Clearance: Ensure there is at least a 2-foot clearance zone around the unit. Trim back any bushes, weeds, or tall grass that might be hugging the metal fins.
  • Cleaning: You can gently rinse the condenser coils with a garden hose to remove dust and grass clippings. Never use a pressure washer; the high-pressure stream will flatten the delicate aluminum fins and ruin the unit's efficiency.
  • Bent Fins: If you see large areas of flattened fins, you can use a "fin comb" to straighten them, though this requires a steady hand.
  • Fan Motor: If the fan isn't spinning but the unit is humming, you might be dealing with fan motor issues in Arcadia. Sometimes a failed capacitor — which acts like a giant battery to start the motor — is the culprit. You might also hear a buzzing sound which indicates an electrical component is struggling to engage.

Frequently Asked Questions about AC Maintenance

How often should I replace my air filter?

In the San Gabriel Valley, we recommend checking your filter every month. If you have pets or allergies, replace it every 30 to 60 days. In a home with no pets and light usage, you might get away with every 90 days. Standard 1-inch filters are inexpensive and are your best defense against system failure.

Why is my AC running but the temperature isn't dropping?

This is usually caused by restricted airflow (dirty filter), a dirty outdoor condenser coil, or a refrigerant leak. If you’ve checked the filter and cleaned the outdoor unit, it’s time to call a pro to check the refrigerant levels.

Can I clean my own AC coils?

You can safely clean the outdoor condenser coils with a gentle garden hose. However, the indoor evaporator coils are much harder to reach and very delicate. Cleaning the indoor coils is best left to a professional during a seasonal tune-up to avoid damaging the fins or creating a mess in your home.

Conclusion

Taking the time for ac troubleshooting before calling a pro can save you a significant amount of money and get your home back to a comfortable temperature faster. Whether you are in Baldwin Park, West Covina, or anywhere else in the San Gabriel Valley, these simple checks are the first line of defense against the summer heat.

Ruben from Piggies went above and beyond when he came to provide us with a quote for doing some duct work. He was also able to identify the underlying problem as to why we have been having a major issue with our heat in our office suite. He took photos, explained the issue, what he could and could not do, and what to communicate to our property owner. He spent far longer answering questions and finding the source of an issue that wasn't even the reason why he was onsite. EXCELLENT
CUSTOMER SERVICE!

First of all I NEVER do reviews or rate any company or product. But, Piggies Air Conditioning did an amazing job at a GREAT price! I always get at least 3 estimates, and in this particular situation, I had at least 5. These guys were the most reasonable by several thousand dollars, with BETTER equipment that the others! Our ac and heat package is at least a 17 seer system, which is top of the line! I've been in the construction business my entire life, and dealt with many companies from all the trades. It really doesn't get any better than Piggies! This company and its personnel were on time, and courteous, which is hard to come by these days. Ruben, Luis were very professional, and I was in constant contact with them throughout the job. The Daikin product is one of the best in the world! I'm giving Piggies two thumbs way up!

From the moment I contacted Ruben, their team displayed an impressive level of knowledge and experience in the field. They answered all of my MANY questions with ease and friendliness and provided insights that really helped me understand my options and the scope of work as a whole. The communication throughout the process was fantastic. They kept me informed every step of the way, which was especially reassuring as a new homeowner navigating this kind of installation for the first time. I felt confident in their expertise and reccomendations they presented for our new HVAC sytems. When it came time for the installation, I was blown away by how efficient and professional the team was. They did a fantastic job with the installation itself and left the area spotless afterward. It was clear they respected our home as if it were their own, which is surprisingly rare in certain service fields, and greatly appreciated. Overall great job replacing our antiquated AC unit. The evaluation and detail is a big deal to us. Rueben explained all the techincal aspects and gave us great
recommendations and feedback. The actual installation was painless and unremarkable, his AC experts got it done, got it cleaned and most importantly got it right. Rueben even went a step further to assure we had
protection from the coming rain, that is service unheard of these days. His price was competitive and a REAL value for the service we recieved. Using anyone else for your AC needs, would be a huge mistake. We thank them again and will recommend to everyone.

I am a realtor in Los Angeles, and while we were getting ready to sell my clients home in Pasadena, an inspector from another company backed into my clients air conditioner. I was referred to Piggies AC by another trusted client so I called them. I talked to Ruben, he answered the phone right away, answered some of my initial questions, and was able to get me an appointment just two days later. On site Ruben was there on time, was extremely knowledgeable, And told us the best course of action to get the AC unit back in good working order. A day or two later he sent us an invoice and his prices were very reasonable. I am happy, Client is happy, thank you Ruben!

Leaving a 5-star review just after the initial inspection because I was blown away by Ruben's professionalism.
Echoing a lot of the other reviews here, Piggies Air Conditioning responds so quickly to requests (even though I actually accidentally sent in multiple requests on my side without responding, oops!)
They were able to come do a FREE energy audit and initial inspection on the same day and Ruben was amazing at explaining his thoughts on our house's situation and what he thought was worth the money and wasn't worth the money.
I truly felt like he was trying to help me find the best solution to our issues instead of just trying to upsell us on everything and anything.
I'm definitely recommending this business to anyone I know if they want a trustworthy and realistic service, value, and quality.
