7 Signs Your AC Unit Is Undersized and Overworked

7 Signs Your AC Unit Is Undersized and Overworked

Is Your AC Struggling to Keep Up? Here Are the Signs of an Undersized Unit

The most common undersized ac unit signs and problems homeowners notice are:

  • Constant running — the system never shuts off, even overnight
  • Thermostat gap — the indoor temperature stays 2–3°F above the setpoint
  • High humidity — air feels sticky or clammy even when the AC is on
  • Uneven cooling — some rooms are comfortable while others feel like an oven
  • Spiking energy bills — utility costs climb during summer despite no change in habits
  • Frozen evaporator coils — ice buildup caused by the unit running flat out with poor airflow
  • Frequent breakdowns — components wear out faster from constant overwork

Here in the San Gabriel Valley, summer temperatures regularly push into the 90s — and when they do, an undersized AC unit doesn't just make your home uncomfortable. It works around the clock without ever catching up, quietly driving up your energy bills and wearing itself out years ahead of schedule.

A properly sized AC should run in cycles of about 15–20 minutes during hot weather and cool your home to roughly 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature. If yours is running non-stop and your thermostat reading still doesn't budge, that's a strong signal your system may not have enough cooling capacity for your home.

The seven signs below will help you figure out whether your AC is simply undersized — or whether something else is going on.

Infographic comparing 7 signs of undersized vs oversized AC units with BTU, humidity, and cycle time data infographic

Constant Running and Thermostat Struggles

In a perfect world (and a perfectly sized system), your air conditioner acts like a marathon runner who knows exactly when to pace themselves. Under normal conditions in May 2026, a healthy AC unit should cycle for about 15 to 20 minutes to reach your desired temperature, then shut off until the home warms up again.

However, when you are dealing with undersized ac unit signs and problems, the "marathon" never ends. Because the unit lacks the raw cooling capacity (measured in BTUs) to remove enough heat from your Baldwin Park or Pasadena home, it stays in a state of continuous operation. You might notice that even as the sun goes down and the outside air cools, your unit is still humming away at 10:00 PM.

A key benchmark we use is the 20-degree temperature drop. An adequately sized system should be able to keep your home about 20 degrees cooler than the outside air. If it is 95°F in West Covina and your thermostat is set to 72°F, but the display refuses to drop below 78°F, your unit is likely too small. It simply cannot "catch" the heat load as fast as the sun is adding it. This constant struggle is a primary reason for Solving AC Cycling Problems Pasadena Homes. When a system is too small, it doesn't "cycle" at all—it just stays on until something breaks. If your system is running but the house isn't getting cooler, you may be facing an AC System Not Working Covina scenario where the hardware is fine, but the capacity is insufficient.

High Indoor Humidity and Clammy Air

Most homeowners think of their AC as a giant refrigerator for their house, but its second job is just as important: it’s a dehumidifier. As the AC pulls warm air over the cold evaporator coils, moisture in the air condenses into water and drains away. On a muggy day, a properly sized system can remove up to 25 gallons of water from your indoor air.

When a unit is undersized, the dehumidification process fails. You might think that because the unit runs constantly, it would remove more moisture. In reality, an undersized unit often fails to reach the "steady-state" cooling required to effectively pull humidity from every corner of the house. The air coming out of the vents might feel slightly cool, but the environment remains sticky or clammy.

High indoor humidity isn't just a comfort issue; it's a health risk. Excess moisture in San Dimas or La Verne homes can lead to mold growth and dust mite proliferation. If you find yourself reaching for a fan even when the AC is on because the air feels "heavy," it’s one of the classic Top 5 Signs Your AC Needs Repair Before Summer Hits. Persistent humidity issues are often one of the major Signs That You Need a New AC System that is correctly sized for your home’s specific moisture load.

Undersized AC Unit Signs and Problems with Energy Bills

We often hear from homeowners in Alhambra or Monrovia who are shocked by their summer utility bills. They might see a $300 to $500 monthly bill and wonder if the utility company made a mistake. Usually, the culprit is an undersized unit.

It sounds counterintuitive—shouldn't a smaller unit use less electricity? In theory, yes, but only if it cycles off. Because an undersized unit runs at 100% capacity for 24 hours a day to try (and fail) to reach a thermostat setpoint, its total kilowatt-hour consumption sky-rockets. Research shows that an undersized AC can increase utility bills by 15-30% during the peak of the Southern California summer compared to a properly sized unit.

If you suspect your unit is too small, ask your neighbors with similar-sized homes in Arcadia or Whittier what they are paying. If your bill is significantly higher, your system is likely overworking. This type of inefficiency often leads to AC Bill Spikes in Summer. Furthermore, a system that never stops running draws a constant, heavy load of electricity, which can lead to electrical stress. This is one reason why you might need to Fix AC That Trips the Circuit Breaker during a heatwave.

Hot Spots and Frozen Evaporator Coils

Does your living room feel like the Arctic while your upstairs bedroom feels like the Sahara? Uneven cooling is a hallmark of undersized ac unit signs and problems. An undersized blower and compressor lack the "push" and capacity to move enough conditioned air to the furthest reaches of your home. This is especially common in two-story homes in Diamond Bar or homes with "open concept" layouts that require more cooling volume than a standard unit can provide.

One of the most surprising signs of an undersized unit is a frozen evaporator coil. You might see actual ice forming on the copper lines or the indoor unit. How can a unit that is too small get too cold? When an AC runs flat out for hours on end without a break, the temperature of the coil can drop below 32 degrees. If there isn't enough warm air being pulled over that coil (because the unit is too small for the space), the condensation on the coil freezes.

Once the ice starts to form, it acts as an insulator, making it even harder for the AC to cool your home. You’ll experience AC Hot and Cold Spots in Your Home that just won't go away. If you see ice, you need to know What to Do When Your AC Freezes Up immediately to prevent compressor damage. Often, this is exacerbated by airflow issues, so Address Weak Airflow from Your AC Vents before assuming the unit size is the only problem.

The Importance of Manual J Load Calculations

In the old days, many installers used a "rule of thumb" to size AC units—something like "one ton of cooling for every 500 square feet." In May 2026, we know that this method is deeply flawed and often leads to the very undersized ac unit signs and problems we’re discussing today.

To get the sizing right, we use what’s called a Manual J load calculation. This is the industry-standard scientific method for determining exactly how much heat your home gains throughout the day. A proper calculation doesn't just look at square footage; it considers:

FactorWhy it Matters for Sizing
Insulation LevelsBetter insulation keeps heat out, requiring a smaller unit.
Window OrientationWest-facing windows in the San Gabriel Valley catch the brutal afternoon sun.
Ceiling HeightHigh vaulted ceilings increase the volume of air that needs cooling.
OccupancyMore people (and pets) in the home generate more internal heat.
Ductwork EfficiencyLeaky ducts mean you need more capacity to compensate for lost air.

Using a "rule of thumb" is a gamble. If you end up with a unit that is even a half-ton too small, you'll face years of discomfort and high bills. This is why we focus on Solutions for AC Systems with Uneven Cooling that start with a professional load assessment.

Diagnosing Undersized AC Unit Signs and Problems

Before you conclude your AC is too small, we always recommend ruling out other common "performance killers." Sometimes a unit acts undersized because it is struggling with a separate issue. We check for:

  • Low Refrigerant Levels: A leak can make a 3-ton unit perform like a 1.5-ton unit.
  • Dirty Filters: Clogged filters restrict airflow, making it impossible for the unit to reach its rated capacity.
  • Ductwork Leaks: If your cool air is leaking into the attic, it will never reach your bedrooms.
  • Dirty Coils: Dirt on the outdoor condenser prevents heat from escaping, slowing down the cooling process.

If your system is clean, charged, and maintained but still can't hit the thermostat setpoint, it’s officially undersized.

Long-term Risks of an Overworked System

Running an undersized AC isn't just a nuisance; it's a financial drain that ends in premature equipment failure. Think of it like driving your car at 100 miles per hour, 24 hours a day. Eventually, the engine is going to give out.

The mechanical stress of continuous operation leads to component overheating. Electrical relays, fan motors, and the compressor—the heart of your system—are all designed to have "rest periods." When those rest periods disappear, the lifespan of the system drops dramatically. While a properly sized and maintained Daikin unit can last 12 to 15 years (or even up to 20), an undersized unit often fails in just 5 to 8 years.

Frequent repairs are another hidden cost. Homeowners with overworked systems often spend between $200 and $800 per year on "band-aid" repairs like replacing capacitors or fan motors that burned out from heat stress. Eventually, these costs add up to the point where you realize you’re throwing good money after bad. Recognizing these Signs That You Need a New AC System early can save you from a total system collapse during a July heatwave in West Covina.

Long-term Risks of Undersized AC Unit Signs and Problems

Beyond the equipment itself, there are broader risks to consider:

  1. Property Value: An undersized HVAC system can negatively impact your home's resale value by $5,000 to $10,000. Savvy buyers in the San Gabriel Valley will notice if the house is 78 degrees during a showing.
  2. Health Risks: During extreme heat events, an undersized unit might fail to keep the home at a safe temperature, posing a risk of heat-related illness for elderly family members or pets.
  3. Mold and Property Damage: As mentioned, high humidity can lead to mold in drywall and warping of wood furniture or flooring.

Frequently Asked Questions about AC Sizing

What is a Manual J load calculation?

It is a professional engineering calculation used to determine the exact cooling and heating load of a home. It takes into account the home’s local climate (like the dry heat of the San Gabriel Valley), building materials, window types, and orientation to ensure the AC is sized perfectly—not too big, and not too small.

Can adding insulation fix an undersized AC?

In some cases, yes. If your AC is only slightly undersized, improving your attic insulation or sealing air leaks can reduce the "heat load" on your home. This might be enough to allow your current unit to finally reach the thermostat setpoint. However, if the unit is significantly too small, insulation won't be a magic bullet.

How many square feet per ton of cooling do I need?

While the old rule was 500 sq. ft. per ton, modern homes in Southern California vary wildly. A 1,500 sq. ft. ranch in Covina built in 1965 might need 3 tons, while a brand-new, highly efficient 1,500 sq. ft. home might only need 2 tons. This is why a professional assessment is the only way to be sure.

Conclusion: Get the Right Fit for Your Home

Ruben from Piggies went above and beyond when he came to provide us with a quote for doing some duct work. He was also able to identify the underlying problem as to why we have been having a major issue with our heat in our office suite. He took photos, explained the issue, what he could and could not do, and what to communicate to our property owner. He spent far longer answering questions and finding the source of an issue that wasn't even the reason why he was onsite. EXCELLENT
CUSTOMER SERVICE!

First of all I NEVER do reviews or rate any company or product. But, Piggies Air Conditioning did an amazing job at a GREAT price! I always get at least 3 estimates, and in this particular situation, I had at least 5. These guys were the most reasonable by several thousand dollars, with BETTER equipment that the others! Our ac and heat package is at least a 17 seer system, which is top of the line! I've been in the construction business my entire life, and dealt with many companies from all the trades. It really doesn't get any better than Piggies! This company and its personnel were on time, and courteous, which is hard to come by these days. Ruben, Luis were very professional, and I was in constant contact with them throughout the job. The Daikin product is one of the best in the world! I'm giving Piggies two thumbs way up!

I recently had the pleasure of working with Piggies Air Conditioning, and I can't recommend them enough! From the moment I contacted Ruben, their team displayed an impressive level of knowledge and experience in the field. They answered all of my MANY questions with ease and friendliness and provided insights that really helped me understand my options and the scope of work as a whole. The communication throughout the process was fantastic. They kept me informed every step of the way, which was especially reassuring as a new homeowner navigating this kind of installation for the first time. I felt confident in their expertise and reccomendations they presented for our new HVAC sytems. When it came time for the installation, I was blown away by how efficient and professional the team was. They did a fantastic job with the installation itself and left the area spotless afterward. It was clear they respected our home as if it were their own, which is surprisingly rare in certain service fields, and greatly appreciated. Overall, my experience with Piggies Air Conditioning was excellent, and I would gladly recommend them to anyone in need of HVAC services.

Overall great job replacing our antiquated AC unit. The evaluation and detail is a big deal to us. Rueben explained all the techincal aspects and gave us great
recommendations and feedback. The actual installation was painless and unremarkable, his AC experts got it done, got it cleaned and most importantly got it right. Rueben even went a step further to assure we had
protection from the coming rain, that is service unheard of these days. His price was competitive and a REAL value for the service we recieved. Using anyone else for your AC needs, would be a huge mistake. We thank them again and will recommend to everyone.

I am a realtor in Los Angeles, and while we were getting ready to sell my clients home in Pasadena, an inspector from another company backed into my clients air conditioner. I was referred to Piggies AC by another trusted client so I called them. I talked to Ruben, he answered the phone right away, answered some of my initial questions, and was able to get me an appointment just two days later. On site Ruben was there on time, was extremely knowledgeable, And told us the best course of action to get the AC unit back in good working order. A day or two later he sent us an invoice and his prices were very reasonable. I am happy, Client is happy, thank you Ruben!

Leaving a 5-star review just after the initial inspection because I was blown away by Ruben's professionalism.
Echoing a lot of the other reviews here, Piggies Air Conditioning responds so quickly to requests (even though I actually accidentally sent in multiple requests on my side without responding, oops!)
They were able to come do a FREE energy audit and initial inspection on the same day and Ruben was amazing at explaining his thoughts on our house's situation and what he thought was worth the money and wasn't worth the money.
I truly felt like he was trying to help me find the best solution to our issues instead of just trying to upsell us on everything and anything.
I'm definitely recommending this business to anyone I know if they want a trustworthy and realistic service, value, and quality.
